I read this statement here at St. Patrick Parish at the 9:30 a.m. Mass last Sunday, October 4, 2020. Many of you have no doubt noticed that our part time musician and cantor, Ric Koenig, has not been present on church property for Mass or otherwise for some time. I want to be transparent about the reasons for that, and bring you all up to date on some recent developments.
On June 1, 2020, Mr. Koenig came to us and advised us of allegations against him of inappropriate conduct involving a minor female, and further advised us that he was innocent of these allegations. The alleged conduct did not occur on parish property or involve a parish program. We immediately reported the matter to law enforcement, and immediately suspended Mr. Koenig’s duties at the parish by placing him on administrative leave, as we waited for law enforcement to conduct their investigation. On September 30, we came to learn that a criminal case had been filed and Mr. Koenig was charged on September 16 in an indictment with multiple felonies relating to this alleged inappropriate conduct. Further information, including specific charges, is publicly available on the Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court website. Mr. Koenig is no longer employed by the parish, and is not at this time permitted on parish property. I ask that you keep all affected by this matter in prayer.
